Every
day, our home care and hospice providers
are coming face to face with the challenge
of language barriers, and the need for a bridge of understanding facing
situations where primary languages are often something other than English.
Trying
to ascertain critical information can be difficult enough. But when English is
at best a poor second language, communication is further hampered by stress, (under stress people naturally revert
to thinking and talking in their native language), making the situation even
more difficult.
To assist home
care providers in meeting this challenge, and ensure compliance with Title VI, the National Association for Home Care (NAHC) has
negotiated a special agreement with Language
Line Services in which AHHIF can take advantage of. As a member of
AHHIF, home care providers can now communicate clearly with virtually any
patient, anytime, anywhere, at a generous discount
Language Line has certified medical interpreters for the following languages: Arabic, Cambodian, Cantonese, French, German, Haitian
Creole, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian,
Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Farsi, Tagalog, H'mong, Serbian, Bosnian, and
Croatian. These languages represent the most highly requested languages in the
healthcare industry and over 95 percent of customer demand
AHHIF members do not have to pay the one-time only start up fee and the
minimum monthly usage fee of $50. Usage is billed in one-minute increments and
price is based on the language requested and the time of day.
This
partnership offers a solution to help members serve even the most diverse
communities while exceeding JCAHO and NCQA requirements.
